Kristin Smith

Security Engineer, Google

As a Security Engineer at Google, SECedu tutor and a UNSW CSE alumni, my passion for cyber security is deeply intertwined with UNSW, and fuels my interest in furthering professional education with the field of cyber security.

Prior to commencing university, I undertook the ADF Gap Year program and worked full-time as a driver in the Australian Army. I then studied a Bachelor of Computer Science full-time while working as a front-end developer for a startup and as a tutor for SECedu. My decision to study Computer science (and subsequently Cyber Security) was heavily influenced by some truly remarkable mentors, consisting of university staff members, peers, and coworkers. I was drawn to computer science as it gave me the tools to quickly develop solutions to complex problems, but I found the problem solving aspect of security particularly interesting. My enthusiasm for education and security led me to tutor various cyber security courses at UNSW and eventually pursue my current role in Detection and Response at Google.
